1. The Ministry of Environment has announced that the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) will take place in Marrakesh, Morocco, from November 7 to 18, marking the first of its kind since the entry into force of the Paris Agreement on climate change on November 4, 2016.
2. The COP22 is expected to serve as an opportunity to muster the capability of the global community for the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the framework of a “new climate regime.”
° The Republic of Korea, having completed its domestic procedure for the ratification of the Paris Agreement and deposited the instrument of ratification on November 3, will inform the other participating countries of its ongoing efforts to establish mid- to long-term implementation plans, including a basic roadmap for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions until 2030, and thereby continue to take an active part in international efforts to address climate change.
3. With the Paris Agreement brought into force, the participating countries will accelerate negotiations on details necessary for the implementation of the Agreement.
4. The ROK delegation to the meeting, in cooperation with the member countries of the Environment Integrity Group (EIG), will seek to contribute to efforts to create an environmentally sound international carbon market and to build a transparent reporting and monitoring system to be shared by developed and developing countries. The country, together with those in the EIG, plans to act as an arbitrator between developed and developing countries on their sharply disputed issues.
