1. Finn Meinel, whom the government of the Republic of Korea had appointed in October 2015 as its first-ever honorary consul to Greenland, an autonomous country within the Danish Realm, was presented with a letter of appointment in Greenland’s capital of Nuuk on June 28.
2. The ROK’s Ambassador Ma Young-sam to Denmark asked honorary consul Meinel to make active efforts to promote the ROK-Greenland relations and protect ROK nationals in Greenland. Honorary consul Meinel responded that he will do his best to that end in various fields, ranging from political affairs and economy to culture and sports, with pride as an honorary consul of the ROK.
3. The harsh climate and inadequate infrastructure had made it difficult for Greenland to achieve development until recently when Canada, Australia, China and other major countries have started to boost investments in Greenland for the exploration and development of natural resources. By appointing the honorary consul, the ROK has paved the way for closer cooperation with Greenland, including in the development of natural resources and the construction of infrastructure.
